Fix Leaking Roof Valley Flashing

Plug pinholes with roofing cement and patch holes up to about 3 4 inch in diameter with a patch from the same material as the flashing. On our ultimate roof system we install self adhering ice and water underlayment under the valley metal. Step 2 place a bucket underneath the nail to catch the water as it runs down the nail. Roof vent pipes from plumbing or exhaust vents penetrate the roof and are usually sealed using a collar style flashing made out of a flexible material like epdm rubber or flexible pvc.

The nail will provide a path for the water. When then take the lower pitched or smaller side the panel the receives the least amount of water and use that as our base. The valley flashing laid over the joint where the two roofs meet should overlap the step flashing at least 2 in. A properly flashed roof valley should have an ice and water shield installed with roofing felt being properly secured over the ice and water.

Metal flashing is used to divert water. We install 20 inch wide valley flashing on all of our roofs. Step 3 lay the flashing. Insert a nail in the hole where water is leaking through the roof.

A metal lining under the membrane secures that the valley will never puncture again. Small holes or corroded spots in flashing can be easily repaired. Cut each side of the flashing at the lower end to conform with the corresponding edges of the roof using sheet metal cutters. First roughen the area around the hole with a wire brush or sandpaper and then clean it.

Removing the shingles in the valley area and preparing to install a rubber membrane a metal flashing was installed to give the rubber support for when people walk on the roof this will be the place where they step. Place the shingles to one side for use later. If leaks continue to occur from ice dams consider installing roof edge heating cables. Then reshingle sliding metal step flashing behind the fascia board the trim behind the gutter.

You may want to carefully measure the flashing and only lift up as many shingles as you need to get that into the roof or you may want to lift up a number near to the valley in order to ensure that the roof is fully protected in the future. If the ice and water shield is missing then you will have to remove the shingles on both sides along the valley put ice and water shield in place and re shingle the roof. In either situation the leaking roof valley can be fixed by removing affected shingles and structural elements and upgrading your roof s flashing.
